Efficacy

Intrauterine Device (IUD) is a very effective method of contraception. The failure rate is only 1-2%.
IUDs used in the Maternal & Child Health Centres (MCHCs) belong to the 'umbrella' type and 'T' type: both bear a thread at the base for self-inspection or inspection by the doctor.
The 'umbrella' type IUD is effective for 5 years, whereas different 'T' type IUDs need to be changed every 3-10 years depending on the model.

For consideration of the suitability for insertion of IUDs, seek advice from a doctor if you have any of the following conditions:

History of gynaecological diseases (e.g. uterine or pelvic infection, uterine fibroid, ectopic pregnancy, sexually transmitted disease)
Known heart problems or copper allergy (the IUDs used in MCHCs contain copper)
You or your sex partner have more than one sex partner (there is a higher chance of pelvic infection)
Insertion procedure and subsequent monitoring
Insertion is performed by a doctor
You have to abstain from sexual intercourse or use condoms in the first week after insertion
You are requested to attend for check-up including pelvic examination 6 weeks, 6 months and then yearly after the insertion to ensure the IUD is not misplaced
During menses, examine the sanitary pads to watch for expulsion of the IUD
The IUD should be removed 1-2 years after menopause.

Complications of the procedure

	Perforation of uterus
	Pelvic Infection
	Vasovagal shock

Please note that these complications are uncommon. Your doctor will explain to you about further details.
Side Effects

You may experience the following in the initial period after insertion:
Increased menstrual flow which, if not too heavy, is acceptable and normal
Slight menstrual pain, which is also normal
Increased amount of normal vaginal discharge

You need to seek medical attention as soon as possible if you have the following conditions:

	Suspected or confirmed pregnancy
Abnormal or severe abdominal / pelvic pain
	Excessive menstrual flow
Foul smelling or thick vaginal discharge
Expulsion of the IUD (e.g. loss of IUD thread)

Please return to the MCHC and seek medical advice from our staff if you have any queries
