How to manage nipple pain?

At the early stage of breastfeeding, both you and your baby are still learning and adapting to the process, it is very common for you to have brief nipples pain when the baby starts suckles. With time and patience, you and your baby will acquire the breastfeeding technique, and you will not have sore nipple anymore. However, if you have nipple pain throughout the whole feeding process, you should seek advice from healthcare professionals as soon as possible. Since most nipple pain is caused by improper attachment of the baby, early correction of attachment helps to prevent further nipple pain. Moreover, pain can suppress milk let-down reflex. Together with your baby's improper suckling, these will impede milk flow and further decrease milk production. Cracked nipples are vulnerable to bacteria or fungal infection. Therefore, nipple pain should not be over sighted. We strongly recommend you to seek advice from Maternal and Child Health Centres or other healthcare professionals if you have persistent nipple pain.
