Breastfeeding Peer Support Service
Most expectant parents are aware of the benefits of breastfeeding and want to give their babies the best natural nourishment. However, they may worry about how to achieve it and do it well. Throughout the breastfeeding journey, parents may have different questions, including "What are the techniques for breastfeeding?", "How do I know if the baby is getting enough?", and "How can I manage breastfeeding after returning to work?". During these times, mothers would feel more relaxed with the support from peers. With this in mind, the Department of Health has launched the Breastfeeding Peer Support Scheme, which is managed by a non-governmental organisation called the "Natural Parenting Network". Volunteer mothers who had breastfed before are trained to become peer counsellors and provide mother-to-mother support, so that breastfeeding mothers are empowered to initiate and continue breastfeeding.
