Is my breastfed baby having diarrhoea if she passes loose stool? Moreover, what should I do if my baby has no bowel movement for several days?

There is a big difference on the frequency and habit of bowel movements between a breastfed baby and a formula milk-fed baby. As long as your baby is energetic, eating and growing well, you do not need to worry.

Some exclusively breastfed babies will pass out loose stool or have more frequent bowel movement. It is fine as long as the stool is not watery or frothy. When your baby is about 1 month old, she may start having less bowel movement or even none for several days. As long as the stool she passes out is soft and she is energetic and farts, you have nothing to worry about. Just keep observing your baby's condition. If your baby has a bloated tummy, and no fart and bowel movement for more than one day or vomit persistently, bring your baby to a doctor immediately. If you have any question about your baby's bowel movement, you may consult Maternal and Child Health Centres or other healthcare professionals for advice.
