When will my baby quit night feeding?

Newborn baby has a tiny stomach she needs to be fed frequently. It is very natural for her to wake up for night feeds. You need not to hurry your baby to quit night feeds. With patience and practice, you and your baby will master breastfeeding technique; then your baby will establish a regular feeding habit and the number of feeds will reduce gradually. For babies who are 3 months old or above, two-thirds of their sleeping time occurs at night. At 6 months old or above, about 50% of the babies can sleep for as long as 6 hours at night. Therefore, when the baby obtains enough nutrients during the day and have enough activities, she will sleep longer at night and quit night feeding naturally.

However, every baby varies. To learn more about baby sleep habits, please visit the Family Health Service website: www.fhs.gov.hk and read the leaflet of “Parenting series five and six”: "The Lullaby I - Developing Regular Sleep Patterns” and “The Lullaby II - My Child Won't Sleep”. If you have any question, you may consult the Maternal and Child Health Centres or other healthcare professionals for advice.
