When will menses return after pregnancy?

Menstration will usually return in 4 to 6 weeks for mothers who are not breastfeeding. For breastfeeding mothers, menses will return later.

As ovulation can occur before menses returns, even when menses has not yet returned, reliable contraception is required when sexual intercourse is resumed.

The first menses after pregnancy might be different from your usual menses. The volume may be less and it may last for a shorter period. However, if it is persistent or the amount is massive, especially if there is also lower abdominal pain or discomfort, then this could be due to tissues retaining inside the uterus, what we called “retained products of gestation”. Or, it could also be infection of the uterus. In such case, you should go and consult doctor for assessment immediately.
