Precautions During Very Hot Weather For Pregnant Women
(08/2026 Published)
When you are pregnant, your body has to work harder to regulate your temperature, which makes you more susceptible to heat-related illnesses. Pregnancy can also increase the risk of dehydration, making it even harder for your body to stay at a safe temperature.
To protect yourself and your baby during very hot weather, follow the “3 Stays” precautions below:
Stay Hydrated
- Drink water regularly to prevent dehydration.
- Avoid caffeinated drinks (such as coffee and tea) and alcoholic beverages, as they may increase fluid loss through urination and contribute to dehydration.
Stay Cool
- Wear light-coloured, loose-fitting and breathable clothing to reduce heat absorption and allow sweat to evaporate, helping your body cool down.
- Keep indoor areas well ventilated. Maintain appropriate temperature and humidity by opening windows or using a fan or air-conditioning.
Stay Away From The Heat
- Avoid strenuous exercise and prolonged outdoor activities, such as hiking or running.
- Stay active with gentle exercises, such as morning or evening walk, or stretching in a cool indoor space.
- Avoid going outside during peak heat hours. If outdoor activities are necessary, schedule them for cooler times of day and bring enough water.
Pay close attention to your health. Seek medical help immediately if you experience any symptoms of heat-related illnesses:
- Dizziness
- Nausea
- Headache
- Shortness of breath
- Confusion
- Unusual weakness
Pregnant women with chronic respiratory or cardiovascular diseases should seek immediate medical attention if there is any sudden change in condition.
