Should I eat more to increase my milk supply?

As long as your baby is suckling well and fed on demand, your milk supply will meet her needs. Breastfeeding mothers only need an extra 500 kcal a day for milk production. If you follow the tips below, your breastmilk is ensured to be good quality.

  • Eat a variety of foods but avoid overeating
  • Choose whole grains, and eat more vegetables and fruits
  • Eat a bit more meat, fish and eggs. Choose fish rich in omega-3 fatty acid but low in mercury content
  • Choose iodine-rich seafood, eat kelp or seaweed occasionally
  • Eat food high in calcium
  • Drink more water or soup
  • Drink less coffee or strong tea
  • Do not smoke or drink alcohol
  • Consult a registered Chinese medicine practitioner before taking traditional herbal medicine or tonics

Furthermore, outdoor activities and sun bath help to increase the amount of vitamin D in your breastmilk. Vitamin D helps the absorption of calcium which is essential for the growth of your baby's bone.
