Sub-heading: Special sessions,(1) Making congee with meat and vegetables for a 7 to 8 month old baby (2) Cleaning your baby's mouth

Hostess: Now let's see how to cook congee with meat and vegetables for 7 to 8 month old babies.

Hostess: To cook congee for your baby, you'll need to prepare the ingredients, 1/2 to 1 bowl of congee, 1 to 2 tablespoon of vegetable, 1 tablespoon of meat or fish, listed in the box on the screen. Don't forget to add a small amount of vegetable oil. This can give your baby polyunsaturated fats to help your baby's development. Remember to wash your hands before preparing the food.

Sub-heading: Cooking vegetable and meat congee

Sub-heading: Step 1, Cooking plain congee

Narrator: First, you need to cook the congee. Boil a suitable amount of water in a pot. Add in the soaked rice. To make thicker congee, add less water. Once the mixture boils, turn down the stove to medium-low heat. Stir the mix so that it doesn't burn. Continue simmering until the desired texture is reached.

Sub-heading: Step 2, Prepare the chopped vegetable

Narrator: Next, we'll prepare chopped green veggies. First, wash the vegetables and soak them in water for 1 hour. Then, pick off the young leaves. After that, blanch the leaves in boiling water for 1 minute to remove harmful chemicals. When that is done, chop the leaves to the desired fineness.

Sub-heading: Step 3, Prepare the minced meat

Narrator: The minced meat for your baby should be chopped finely. First, wash a piece of meat. Put it in the freezer for a while so that it can be cut into thin slices easily. When you slice the meat, cut across the fibres. Cut the meat slices into fine strips. Then, cut the meat strips into tiny lumps. After that, chop the meat in different directions.

Sub-heading: Final Step, Mix the vegetable and meat into the congee

Narrator: Next, mix a small amount about a table spoon of cool, boiled water into 1 to 2 tablespoon of the minced meat to avoid lumps. Then, add the minced meat into the pot of boiling congee. Stir the mix while bringing it to a boil. When the minced meat is cooked, add the chopped vegetables and a small amount of vegetable oil. Stir it and bring all of this to a boil and serve.

Sub-heading: Smart tips, Congee with Fish

Narrator: If you use fish instead of meat, choose parts of the fish that have few bones, such as fish fillets or fish belly. First, steam the fish. You can add ginger and spring onions to reduce the fishy taste. Carefully remove the skin and bones from the cooked fish. Then, mash the fish into fine pieces with a spoon. Put the mashed fish into the congee. Bring it to a boil, and serve.

Sub-heading: Special session,(2) Cleaning your baby's mouth

Doctor Felix Yu, Oral Health Education Unit, Department of Health: To ensure your baby has healthy teeth, you should help get him into a habit of cleaning his mouth every day. After the first tooth appears, you can brush it with a baby toothbrush and some drinking water. To clean your baby's mouth, follow these three steps:

Sub-heading: Smart tips

Scene: The baby is lying on the couch. His mother cleans his mouth with a wet guage.

Narrator: First, wash your hands thoroughly with soap. Next, wet a piece of gauze, or cotton with drinking water. Wrap it around your finger. Gently rub your baby's upper gum and then lower gum in a circular motion. If your baby has teeth, remember to clean them too.

Doctor Felix Yu: Also, to protect your baby's teeth, do not allow your baby to drink milk while he is sleeping. Give him cup and help him drink at 7-9 months old. Stop giving him feeding bottles for milk when he reaches 14 months old.
